A Quest for the Ultimate Cappuccino
Rome, Italy August 30 – September 2, 2016

I have never been much of a cappuccino connoisseur, but Europe cries to be the place to convert. There are essential elements that a cappuccino must possess to be considered remarkable: 1) Quality size, 2) Decent price, 3) Great expresso flavor 4) Fantastic Foam, and 5) Artistic Presentation. The espresso in Italy is far superior to anything I have sampled in the states. This advantage gets Italy off to a running start. Brittney and I will compare cappuccinos by region and country. In Italy we will sample them in Rome, Lucca and Sardinia. In Greece, tests will take place in Crete, Santorini, and Athens. Finally, our quest will end in Paris. We hope you cappuccino connoisseurs will enjoy the journey with us.

25 Points-Awesome

So far I am a bit shocked at the range of quality you can experience in Roman cappuccinos. After only four mornings, I can easily rate one cappuccino against another. We are rating our drinks on the five categories listed above using a scale of 1-5, 1 being the worst and 5 being the best. This allows 25 points possible for each contestant.

Brittney and I begin each morning with cappuccino. The first one we experienced was in the piazza Farnese Rome. It ranked the highest. The drink was affordably priced at 2.3 euros, large by average standards, the foam was fabulous; indulgent, luscious, and plentiful, the espresso flavor was rich, and the Picasso artwork was stunning. This cappuccino rated a perfect 25.

During the next three days the following three cappuccinos have not even been in the running. These drinks were smaller, acceptable espresso, more expensive ranging from 3 to 5 euros. Presentation went from non-existent to adequate, but the foam, oh the poor foam. No one did justice to the foam. It was weak, thin and scarce. How sad to start a new venture, begin with the best only to sink into the gloom of a less than adequate cappuccino to start off your mornings. But friends, do not lose hope.

Brittney and I will continue our quest and will report country and regional updates on the best cappuccinos throughout the next month. We want you to be, “in the know” of where you can enjoy this fabulous morning beverage on your next journey. So stay tuned in for, “The Quest for the Ultimate Cappuccino.”
